Low-FODMAP at McDonald's
A plain beef patty and fries is one of the most reliable fast-food fallbacks anywhere. The garlic and onion live almost entirely in the special sauces and the reconstituted onions — dodge those and the core menu is manageable.

What to order
These are the dependable low-FODMAP picks — and why each one is a safe bet.
Plain hamburger or cheeseburger patty
100% beef with salt and pepper — low-FODMAP; open or skip the bun.
Fries (small or medium)
Potato from a dedicated fryer — low-FODMAP in a normal serving.
Plain scrambled or folded egg
Plain egg is low-FODMAP; ditch the muffin.
Side salad, no croutons, dressing on the side
Plain leaves you can dress with oil or a little of your own.
What to ask the kitchen to change
These can work — with one question or one small adjustment. Here’s exactly what to ask.
The bun
Buns are wheat. Ask for it lettuce-wrapped where offered, or eat the patty and toppings without the top bun.
The burger build
Ask for no Big Mac / special sauce, no reconstituted onions, and no relish. Plain patty, cheese, and lettuce is the safe build.
What to skip
Not forever — most of these come back during reintroduction. During elimination, they’re the reliable triggers to leave off.
Big Mac / special sauce
Onion and garlic.
Reconstituted onions
Onion.
Buns, McMuffins, wraps and hotcakes
Wheat.
Sweet, BBQ and creamy dipping sauces
Onion, garlic, and often HFCS.
Milkshakes and McFlurry
A heavy lactose (and often polyol/HFCS) load.
The exact words to say
Specific beats vague every time. Most staff won’t know what “low FODMAP” means, but they can absolutely answer “is there onion or garlic in that?”
“A plain cheeseburger — just patty and cheese, no bun, no sauce, no onion.”
“Can I get the patty in a lettuce wrap?”
Good to know
- →Plain beef patty plus a small fries is the anywhere-fallback order.
- →Skip the reconstituted onions and any 'special sauce' — that's where the garlic and onion hide.
- →A sachet of ketchup is fine; it's the mayo- and BBQ-based sauces to watch.
